Nine Mile Point COL application review rescheduled

Unistar has asked the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to delay the review of its application for a combined construction and operating licence (COL) for a new reactor at the Nine Mile Point, while it concentrates on that for its Calvert Cliffs site.

Russia and Turkey have issued a joint declaration identifying nuclear energy cooperation as a key part of their economic relations, as speculation mounts that an agreement on the construction of Turkey's first nuclear power plant is near.
Nuclear in Scotland's interest, says minister

The pressure on Scotland's anti-nuclear position was continued today as Jim Murphy, the UK's Minister for Scotland spoke again in favour of the technology. He said the Scottish National Party (SNP) "offers no sophisticated argument" against nuclear.
Italian nuclear renaissance gathers pace

Italy's revival of its nuclear power industry has moved a step further with the creation of a government department devoted to nuclear energy, renewables and energy efficiency. The country aims to generate 25% of its energy from nuclear plants.

Japco to delay Tsuruga 1 shut down

Japan Atomic Power Co (Japco) announced that it will postpone the shut down of its Tsuruga 1 nuclear power reactor beyond the originally scheduled 2010 due to delays in the construction of two new units at the site.
Uprate planned for Fort Calhoun

Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) will uprate its Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant by some 75 MWe, or almost 16%, as part of the company's plan to increase its baseload power supply.
NPCIL and NTPC to form joint venture

National Thermal Power Corp (NTPC), India's largest power company, and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to form a joint venture for the construction of new nuclear power plants in India.

[CBC News, 11 February] Two 107-tonne turbine rotors which inadvertently spent five days at the bottom of the harbour at St John, New Brunswick, are still usable in the Point Lepreau nuclear power plant, according to NB Power.
